Oliver Ames @ Stoughton
Oliver Ames Starters
Offense:
1.
Oliver Ames looked to push the ball almost every time. Off made Stoughton baskets, they get the ball out of the net, get it to Bruha, and run. They hit on several deep passes off turnovers and will look over the top frequently. They will, however, turn the ball over trying to push.
2.
Once they are in a set offense, they run a flex, and they run it well (they call it “Baseline”). This is their bread and butter offense. Even on last possession of overtime, with less than 15 seconds left in a tie game, they ran the flex. They run it with the podt player coming up to set a back screen for the guard (similar to the BC flex). They score most often off their flex in two places:
a.
The post player who sets the back screen receives the pass and will turn, face the hoop, and shoot the elbow jumper.
b.
If that player doesn’t shoot, they hit the second flex cutter coming through a bunch for easy layups.
3.
They also scored a ton of points on offensive rebounds. Specifically, Ethan Miller (#23) and TJ Nicholson (#44) attack the glass on every shot. They are very good rebounders and can finish inside.
4.
They look inside and look to attack the basket. They will take open looks from outside (Bruha, MacKinnon, Miller, and Carney), but prefer to score inside. They made 5 of 7 three point field goals the entire game.
5.
Stoughton put quite a bit off full court, man pressure. Oliver Ames used a “Four Across” break with several options:
a.
Bruha (#10) comes across off a double screen and gets the ball and goes
b.
Bruha comes insid off a screen and gets the ball
c.
They hit deep twice and tried to throw over the top four times. They always had someone going deep when Stoughton put on pressure.
6.
When they were not prepared to set up their press break, they could be pressured and forced to turn the ball over. Bruha can get out of control when not prepared for the pressure. But if they get set up in their break or if defense does not get back to prevent pass over the top, they will make you pay.
7.
Stoughton did not play any zone.
Defense:
1.
They started the game in a 2-3 zone. Guards were very slow to rotate and forwards were very slow to close on shooters. Stoughton made 5 three-point field goals in the first quarter, almost all wide-open looks. Four of the first five possessions of the game, Stoughton got open looks from the corner just by working the ball around the perimeter. After the first quarter, they hardly played any more zone.
2.
They switched to man out of a timeout, but still gave up open looks. They struggled to get through Stoughton’s screens to free up their shooters.
3.
They did not play much full court pressure. They pressured on a few possessions off made free throws. It was more of a different look than it was intended to cause turnovers.
4.
They played a bit of a 2-2-1 press, but it was not effective. They were never able to get a trap and they did not cause any turnovers. They only ran it on two possessions.
5.
Ethan Miller (#23) took two charges and was called for two questionable blocking fouls on plays where it looked like he had position.
6.
They played man on every Stoughton inbounds play under the basket.
7.
They are very aggressive on defense and were over the limit on fouls in both halves and had already picked up their 10th foul with 7:47 left in the fourth quarter.

Overall:
Oliver Ames is a solid team. They like to run, love to push the ball, and have a lot of high-energy players. They also are very disciplined in their set offense and do not take many bad shots. If they miss shots, they get a ton of second chance points. They scored 48 points in the paint. And they battled. They were down big early, but did not panic. They chipped away, forced overtime, and even with their two best players fouled out of the game, managed to win at the buzzer.
I think they key to beating them is to not let them get settled into their flex, force them to take shots outside the flow of their offense, and make them turn the ball over with some pressure. Their defense can be beaten with good screens and quick passes, as they do not rotate well.
